Backtesting
Manual backtesting in the MT5 Strategy Tester
Before you trust a strategy with real money, trade it on history. Here is how to backtest a manual strategy in the MetaTrader 5 Strategy Tester, and how to get results you can actually believe.
Most traders test a strategy by scrolling back on a chart and deciding, with hindsight, where they would have entered. That always looks better than reality. Trading the history candle by candle, without seeing what comes next, is much closer to the real thing, and the MetaTrader 5 Strategy Tester can do exactly that.
Why backtest a manual strategy
- You find out if the edge is real before it costs you money.
- You learn the strategy faster. A month of setups can be traded in an evening.
- You practise execution: entries, stops, position size and trade management, not just the idea.
- You build the habit of following rules, which is what decides results on a live account.
What you need
- MetaTrader 5 with history for the symbol you want to test.
- An Expert Advisor panel that works in the tester. MetaTrader itself has no manual trading buttons in the Strategy Tester, so you need a panel built for its Visual mode. RavandFX works there with every feature, and using it in the tester is free.
Set up the Strategy Tester
- Open the tester with View → Strategy Tester or
Ctrl+R. - In the Settings tab, choose the panel under Expert.
- Pick the symbol, the timeframe and a date range you have not traded or studied recently.
- For Modelling, choose Every tick based on real ticks if your broker provides it. It uses real spreads; otherwise use Every tick.
- Set the deposit and leverage to match the account you plan to trade.
- Turn on Visual mode and press Start.
A chart window opens and price starts moving. Use the speed control to go faster through quiet hours and slower when a setup forms.
Trade it like a live session
- Write your rules before you start: setup, entry trigger, stop, target, and when you will not trade.
- Don't look ahead. Don't scroll forward or restart a day to "try again". In the real market there is no second try.
- Only take your setups. The point is to test the strategy, not to find trades.
- Pause and decide when a setup appears, the same way you would in front of a live chart.
Use real money management
A backtest with random position sizes tells you nothing. Use the same risk per trade you plan to use live, for example 1%, and calculate every position from the stop distance. The lot size calculator and the guide on calculating lot size show how.
Also apply your daily limits: a maximum number of trades and a daily loss limit. If they would have stopped you on a live day, they should stop you in the test too. Read more in forex money management rules.
Record every trade
Keep a simple journal for each trade:
| Field | Example |
|---|---|
| Date and time | 12 Mar, 10:35 |
| Setup | Pullback to the London open level |
| Entry, stop, target | 1.0850 / 1.0825 / 1.0900 |
| Result in R | +2.0R |
| Notes | Entered late, stop was correct |
Measuring results in R (multiples of the amount risked) makes trades comparable even when position sizes differ.
Read the results
After the test, look at these numbers:
- Number of trades. Fewer than 30 says very little; aim for 50 to 100 or more.
- Win rate and average win and loss in R.
- Expectancy:
expectancy = (win rate × average win) − (loss rate × average loss). Positive expectancy means the strategy makes money on average per trade. - Maximum drawdown and the longest losing streak. These tell you what your risk per trade must survive.
The tester's own report also shows figures like profit factor and drawdown for the test.
Common mistakes
- Hindsight. You remember how that week ended. Test periods you don't know well.
- Too few trades, or only trending months. Include ranges and choppy periods.
- Changing the rules halfway. If you change a rule, start a new test.
- Ignoring costs. Real-tick modelling includes the historical spread; commission also matters.
- Practising strategy but not discipline. Use the same limits you will use live.

Common questions
Can you trade manually in the MT5 Strategy Tester?
Not with MetaTrader's own tools: the tester has no buy or sell buttons for manual trades. You need an Expert Advisor panel built to work in the tester's Visual mode, such as RavandFX.
How many trades do I need for a meaningful backtest?
There is no exact number, but fewer than 30 trades tells you very little. Many traders aim for at least 50 to 100 trades across different market conditions before trusting the results.
Is RavandFX free in the Strategy Tester?
Yes. Using RavandFX in the MetaTrader 5 Strategy Tester is free and needs no licence. You only need a licence to trade a live or demo account.
